Sound conservation practice, responsible asset management and creative re-use of historic places must all be based on a deep understanding of the historical development, condition and integrity of the building or place. This research leads to the formulation of a Statement of Significance as the basis for subsequent decision making.
The CMP process then guides the development of desired project outcomes through the filter of protecting significant attributes while managing change or planning for long term asset management. Working within the project team, GBA will prepare conservation policies to ensure the long term sustainability of the significance and distinctive character of the historic place.
The proposed conversion of the 1939 heritage listed former Sydney Water Head Office into a modern hotel, as part of the development of the tallest residential tower in Sydney’s CBD on the adjoining site, presented many challenges and competing opportunities.
GBA Heritage prepared a detailed Conservation Management Plan to guide the conservation of the terracotta tiled façade and the subdivision of office floors into hotel rooms, recapturing the scale and architectural character of the former Rating Chamber that had been lost in the 1960s. Subsequent involvement throughout the construction phase saw the conservation and adaption works brought to a successful outcome.
