Owners and managers of historic properties must ensure that these assets are maintained in a responsible manner over time, ensuring that the buildings and places continue to serve their functional or cultural requirements. Heritage Asset Management can include disposal of redundant property, changing or upgrading the way the buildings are used, and introducing new development opportunities to improve the value of the overall asset base.
GBA Heritage provides a variety of services including analysis of heritage values, identification of heritage issues, and examination of options for re-use or redevelopment, policy formulation, documentation, liaison with heritage authorities, maintenance plans and conservation works schedules. Our involvement can be on a one–off or continuing basis.
GBA Heritage had provided general Heritage Asset Management services for Sydney’s famous Queen Victoria Building to IPOH since the mid 1990s, ensuring that the spirit of the 1980s heritage re-use project remained faithful to its original intent. By 2005, it became clear in the face of emerging competition from major new retail developments in central Sydney, that a complete revival and upgrade was required to meet contemporary servicing, code compliance and visitor requirements.
GBA Heritage and Ancher Mortlock Woolley Architects were key members of the project team that introduced new escalators, shop fronts, handrails, signage and a dramatic new internal colour scheme that has seen the building recapture its premier retail position in Sydney. Now our work concentrates on facilitating swift heritage and development approvals for new and upgrading retail outlets, maximising the overall income stream to IPOH.
This project was awarded a commendation by the Australian Institute of Architects in 2010.
