HERITAGE EXPERT SERVICES

In today’s complex world there are many challenges when integrating development opportunities with the conservation and continuing use of heritage places.  New projects may be of great concern to nearby residents or the local Council.  If complex or challenging projects are to move forward, all parties must either reach consensus or seek resolution through relevant planning tribunals.

Conciliation, consultation and compromise, peer review assessment and the identification of alternative solutions can be essential ingredients before a project gains consent or a difficult issue is resolved.  Senior staff at GBA Heritage bring decades of experience and professional independence that can contribute to the resolution of conflicting ideas or enhanced project opportunities.  If necessary, we represent either applicants or Councils with disputes that have reached the NSW Land and Environment Court.

The historic St John’s Church buildings in Oxford Street, Paddington, had lain abandoned and in poor condition for years.  A scheme for residential development across the rear of the site had long been opposed by nearby residents who were concerned about traffic and privacy.  GBA Heritage worked with Ancher Mortlock Woolley through a series of development concepts and appeals in the NSW Land and Environment Court. Eventually, a solution was developed to conserve and revive the historic buildings, upgrade the forecourt and carefully modify the residential scheme to minimise resident concerns.

New layers of contemporary detailing for the verandahs on the 1860s Manse, new “jewel box” display windows beside the church entry, two apartments within the old Church Hall, a new café, and new uses for the 1914 Manse on the rear corner are all part of the successful urban renewal scheme for this important site on a busy inner city thoroughfare.
