PHOTOGRAPHIC ARCHIVAL RECORDING

Archival recording of historic places and buildings is often imposed as a condition of development consent if the property is to be upgraded and/or the existing buildings demolished or extensively changed.  The recording must usually be completed prior to the issue of a Construction Certificate for the project.

The NSW Heritage Council has published guidelines for photographic recording that set a high standard for the final product.  Records must be lodged in local history libraries or official databases.  GBA Heritage has prepared numerous archival photographic recording dossiers over the years, enabling a wide variety of projects to proceed to construction and completion.  It is essential that the archival record is prepared prior to any demolition commencing.

The historic former Griffiths Teas warehouse in Surry Hills had been vacant and neglected for many decades.  A key to the success of this project by Cornerstone was the dramatic residential conversion that retained the unique spatial character of the historic warehouse.  Sydney City Council kept a close eye on the project to ensure that the architectural significance would be retained and recorded.  In addition to guiding the detailed resolution of the design by Popov Bass Architects, GBA Heritage prepared the Photographic Archival Recording and Interpretation Plan to celebrate the history and contribute to the distinctive imagery that supported a very successful marketing campaign.
